PROGRAM
OVERVIEW

The Doctor of Philosophy Program in Buddhist Studies degree is a two-year program designed for those who desire an excellence in both academics and ethics along with skills in Buddhism integration.

VISION

“Integration of Buddhist Studies for life and social development with awakening and rejoice”

MISSION

The program is aimed to produce

     (1) A Ph.D. graduate with right conduct and morality as a role model in society. A graduate who has knowledge and ability to use and refer English and Pali in research and Dhamma propagation. He who is precise in both the content and principles in the Tipitaka and important Buddhist scriptures.

     (2) A Ph.D. graduate who has a beautiful mind, meritorious, with analytic insight both in study (pariyatti) and practice (paṭipatti). He who has skill in analyzing and solving problems around them wisely.

      (3) A Ph.D. graduate who is an expert in skills and guidelines for applying Dhamma principles in research and innovation for well coexistence in society. A graduate who leads society in the right direction for peace.

In Buddhist Studies

    The Doctor of Philosophy Program is a two-year course with 54 credits in total. (course studies of not less than 18 credits and a doctoral dissertation worth not less than 36 credits).

   

    Students are required to study required subjects for 6 credits and 1 additional non-credited required subject, including major subjects for 6 credits. In addition, students must study from the provided elective subjects of not less than 6 credits.

5. Dissertation (36 Credits)

DISSERTATION

The students are eligible to submit the dissertation proposal for approval of registering for doing a dissertation, when they have already finished attending the subjects for one regular semester at least and accumulated 6 credits at least including having passed the qualifying examinations.

LANGUAGES EXAMINATION:

The students must pass the examination on English Language and choose one of these languages: Pali, Sanskrit, German, Janese, Chinese or French. The foreign student who finished the M.A. from any educational institute aboard can choose the examination on Thai Language as the foreign language.

RESIDENT STUDY:

Two semesters (which may include one summer session), usually consecutive, at any time beginning with the first semester of doctoral study, must be spent in resident study at IBSC. Residence is not merely a period measured in hour. During this period the doctoral aspirant must be involved full time in academic pursuits, which may include up to half-time on-campus teaching or research, or under certain circumstances, a greater percentage of research if it is directed specifically toward the student’s degree objectives.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

The application for admission to the Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies Program, International Buddhist Studies College of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University has the following requirements:

1. Master’s degree or equivalent with at least a 3.5-grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

2. A complete graduate application: apply online at the Office of IBSC Student service.

3. An official transcript (not student’s copy) of all previous undergraduate and graduate credit sent from the institution directly to the Office of IBSC Student service (printed transcripts or official electronic versions are both acceptable).

4. English requirement please check from the list here.

5. A statement of career goals describing an area of interest in curriculum and instruction and how this degree will help meet professional aspirations.

6. Letters of recommendation from two people who can comment on the applicant’s ability to complete a doctoral program of study; the master’s adviser is appropriate to include.

7. A dissertation proposal originally written by the applicant under the topic of what the applicant is interested in doing with 3 research objectives. The format must be in accordance with the dissertation writing style of MCU. An appropriate length is eight to ten pages.
